FutureNEW Youth Service run by youths

FutureNEW Youth Service run by youths

Juliana Chapman By Juliana Chapman

This will be a service with a difference: My aim is that the service be run and delivered by the young service users themselves. I intend to train 2-3 young people up to run this with me.

Providing Information, Advice and Guidance. To provide career advice and guidance. Signposting to services and supporting self referral. Engaging with local companies to increase Apprenticeships available. Support by identifying their individual wellbeing needs and helping them self-refer to this. Connecting with local counsellors who specialise in work with young people. Receiving referrals from the service users and Youth engagement teams within Community Action Sutton and the team with Sutton Police I am already in contact with. By remaining person-centred at all times working with that individual to help them achieve their individual goals. This will build confidence in the young people of Sutton, helping them to identify their needs and wants. My aim to increase the wellbeing of the young people in Sutton, to build confidence in these services and to in turn address how the pandemic has affected them. Crime, Depression and Drug abuse has increased. They are the future.

What we'll deliver:

  • Providing Information, Advice and Guidance.
  • career guidance. Support self referral. Engaging with local companies to increase Apprenticeships available.
  • Identify their wellbeing needs, self-referal. Connect with local counsellors who specialise in work with young people.
  • Provide a non-judgemental safe space so young people can be heard, then have a service carved for them.

Why it's a great idea:

By remaining person-centred at all times working with that individual to help them achieve their individual goals. This will build confidence in the young people of Sutton, helping them to identify their needs and wants. My aim to increase the wellbeing of the young people in Sutton, to build confidence in these services and to in turn address how the pandemic has affected them. Crime, Depression and Drug abuse has increased. They are the future, we need to invest in their wellbeing and encourage resilience. This will be a service with a difference: My aim is that the service be run and delivered by the young service users themselves. I intend to train 2-3 young people up to run this with me, teaching them the skills I have learnt over the years to run a service, budgets, administration, communications, customer service, accessibility and Information and Advice and signposting, remaining impartial, inclusive and person centred. For the young people to be part of the decision making.

Steps to get it done:

  • Identify 2-3 young people to assist with running service.
  • To train them to help run service.
  • To link with a local counsellor to provide 1-1 service
  • To create at least 2-3 Apprenticeships opportunities within Local employers
  • After 12 months: open a hangout for young people at the Life Centre

I have a lot of experience, working within employment services, the NHS, security services, cold calling, People with learning disabilities and people in general. The youth have particularly struggled with this pandemic. They have had nothing to do, nowhere to go and people making decisions for them. I want to train them up to run the service themselves. They are the future. Let's give them a chance to start fresh, yes some may have a conviction or warning, that cannot be the end of someone's potential career! Let's give them the chance to make their FutureNEW!
