Providing a free public outdoor sitting room formed as a square with comfortable supportive benches around 3 sides with planters in each corner and to the rear of the seating, a feelgood ambience.

£1,710
pledged of £4,484

Sorry this project was unsuccessful, we did not reach our fundraising goal.

This unique space, providing much needed public seating in West Worthing Park (near the leisure centre) will deliver on many fronts. Set back from the playground, it will offer safe distanced seating on it's 3 benches, an integrated community garden inviting young and old to get involved in planting and nature, closely supported by the Friends Of West Worthing Park and adjoining allotmenteers. It will also become a focal point, a community hub, a place to meet and interact. Worthing has an acute mental health and social isolation crisis - friendship and chat benches offer an invaluable resource to connect with others, even the smallest interactions can mean so much. It is imperative that we also reach out to our wonderful Scouting and Guiding movements based in the corner of our park, our 2 local pre schools and 2 local primary schools amongst many other organisations to use this resource as a valuable outdoor space to learn and interact, as well as our churches and our elderly.

What we'll deliver:

  • 4 "Forest Saver" premium recycled plastic square planters
  • 3 "Forest Saver" premium recycled plastic "trough" planters
  • 3 "Forest Saver" premium recycled plastic benches with backs

Why it's a great idea:

Our supplier, Earth Anchors, are a trusted local authority provider of street furniture, this particular material has the appearance of dark wood but is fully sustainably recycled, it is extremely durable, requires no maintenance and has a life of over 40 years, this will give sterling service to this community for a generation and beyond. After 2020, more than ever, our green open spaces are more critically important than at any time, allowing people to relax outdoors in a safe, distanced, calming environment is a must for any community. This "community parklet" will provide a boost and focal point for so many groups, local and otherwise, and especially our lovely dog walking groups. Having good quality well resourced places is a great leveller and makes for a happier, more inclusive and better connected community - it is so nice to turn the tide against cuts, things being left to deteriorate or being removed, this is about local communities, friendship, wellbeing and happiness.

Steps to get it done:

  • Funding target reached
  • Concrete base laid
  • Installation of seating and planters
  • Official opening by local dignitaries

We have already secured the construction of a concrete base for this project, any overfunding will be allocated as follows - improving the pathway to the seating area and enhancing the planting.
