Freddie Forever in Feltham!

Freddie Forever in Feltham!

Susie John By Susie John

We want to celebrate the life and times of the former Feltham resident Freddie Mercury. We want to make a wonderful mosaic to honour Freddie and Queen's musical legacy.

We are still deciding on a location for the mural. All backers will be kept updated. Freddie Mercury was one of the world's most flamboyant & iconic superstars. The people of Feltham are very proud of the fact that both Freddie & Brian May spent their early lives growing up in ordinary modest homes in the area. There has been a couple of attempts to recognise Freddie's Feltham roots - a floor piece that disintegrated over time & a very small memorial stone. Both have been ill fitting tributes to such a star. Fans of Queen come to Feltham to pay homage to Freddie & Brian's early years, but don't find much acknowledgment of them. We need a new artwork that truly celebrates Freddie Mercury & Queen. The Mosaic project will be developed in consultation with local groups & individuals. A programme of community workshops will introduce people to the art of making mosaics & the final Freddie mosaic will be installed in a prominent place for all visitors and local people to enjoy.

What we'll deliver:

  • A mosaic artwork that celebrates Freddie Mercury and Queen.
  • Community mosaic workshops

Why it's a great idea:

Feltham is changing fast. It is a busy hub and growing all the time. It is easy to forget that Feltham has a rich and interesting past. Recently there has been a move by local individuals and community groups to try and capture this past for current and future generations to take pride in. This is being achieved through school talks, history days and art projects. There has also been talk of a "Wall of Fame" and a "Feltham History trail" that would honour Feltham's prominent people and it's fascinating agricultural/ industrial past. Creating an Art work for Freddie and Queen would complement this community drive. Instead of people just seeing shops and planes flying over, people would see culturally interesting artworks that link the past with the future. The Mosaic for Freddie would give a focus to the town centre and help to give local people a sense of pride and interest in the town's past. It would also serve as a destination for fans and tourists alike.

Steps to get it done:

  • Consultation of local individuals and groups for design aspects
  • Community mosaic workshops with professional mosaic artist
  • Artist to develop work
  • Finish and installation
  • Opening and celebration of work
