This project aims to bring together people from different ethnic backgrounds. The project's idea is to meet and learn together, and to also remove the stigma of being an immigrant (which often carries a fear of refugees). Immigrants and refugees often fear being stereo typed and labelled which leads to their isolation. This project can help fix this issue as we bring people out of the house, to meet new friends have discussions, share a cup of tea and biscuits or just a laugh. As an immigrant myself, I know what it is to be a stranger in a foreign country. Now I have settled in Wolverhampton, I am ready to give back to the community in Wolverhampton, which has welcomed me. I'd like to help to extend this welcome to others.
What we'll deliver:
Why it's a great idea:
This project is important as it brings isolated people together. They will learn new skills and grow in self-esteem. It will help remove discrimination and hostility towards each other. Then, as immigrants and refugees also bring new skills with them to the meetings, they can share these with others, so helping the local community and making it more vibrant and welcoming.
Steps to get it done:
Once while working on a similar project, I met a woman. She was an illegal immigrant and a victim of trafficking. She was pregnant and reserved. However, through the welcome she found in these meetings, where she was able to speak up about her situation, we managed to help her go to the refugee centre where she received the support she needed. The medical help she received both gave her a safe birthing and also meant they found the throat cancer that had been inside her in time to heal it. She now has a home and a bouncing baby boy .She is very happy. This is the impact of our project and the significant difference we make in people's lives.
