Basildon is not an area that is usually associated with the arts and to be given the licence for what would be an amateur premiere for the region is a fantastic opportunity to help bring a show of this calibre to the area. The licensee, The Really Useful Group, do not hand out licences without a considerable number of enquiries regarding the applicant and we have had to answer numerous questions as to our suitability to produce a show of this importance. Evita is one of the all time great shows and this chance is just too good to miss. We anticipate this production will cost in the region to £50,000 to stage to the standard we would demand. It will give wonderful opportunities to any would be amateur performers in the area to come along and audition for a part. BasOp are open to all comers for open auditions just as long as they can sing, dance or act to some basic degree. We are always happy to give guidance and training to anyone who is keen enough to show their interest.
What we'll deliver:
Why it's a great idea:
'Evita' has never been licenced in this region to an amateur adult company and the incredible opportunity and honour for Basildon Operatic Society to have achieved the recognition to allow us to perform this show at The Towngate Theatre, Basildon is something that we are still pinching ourselves over. The degree of excitement that has already been created is staggering. The management at the Towngate are absolutely thrilled that this 'premiere' is coming to their theatre in May of 2019. We sincerely hope that being given this licence will make folk realise that the arts is something that is alive and well in our town.
Steps to get it done:
The production of 'Evita' is by far the biggest and most expensive thing that BasOp have ever taken on. For example, the licensee demands an 18 piece orchestra which is likely to cost in the region of £4,500 alone. Plus the hire of the theatre at around £8,400, Costumes, lighting, scenery and not forgetting the royalties, the considerable expense goes on and on but we feel it such a wonderful opportunity that we are prepared to go that extra mile and take it on. BasOp always put on a show that is of the highest possible standard and we have many glowing comments regarding our previous productions. We feel that 'Evita' will take us to another level in amateur theatre and with some part funding in place we feel confident that we can pull it off. Our first workshop for the show is in November, this will be followed by auditions and rehearsals beging in January. We look forward to seeing anyone interested to come along to our workshop and hope they may want to join us.
