The New Venture, Start Up NE1? Is a collaboration by Enterprising Students from both Northumbria and Newcastle Universities, Paul Hughes project lead, and President of NUOVO, Northumbria’s student enterprise society, explains,? “I was shocked when I heard that the North East has the lowest number of start-up businesses within the UK, bearing in mind, we have higher than average unemployment and yet such an inspiring city! I got together with fellow students from both Universities to develop a plan on how we could change this. “Once we had the concept, we needed the help that we are about to offer others, and we then enlisted agents to set about finding us some space, along with taking guidance on how to deliver the project!” “At present, we have an empty unit that needs knitting out. We are looking to raise the £6,000 we will need to pay for utilities and a part-time enterprise manager, we will also be asking for furniture and equipment donations

What we'll deliver:

  • Launch a pop-up shop "Start Up NE1" in Newcastle City Centre. The shop will encourage start-ups to pilot their products
  • Cover the cost of a P/t Enterprise Manager
  • Deliver Business Start-Up and enterprise courses and workshops to residents of Newcastle

Why it's a great idea:

We are tackling the gap for pre-start up business in terms of support and mentoring, and a safe space for them to trail their businesses. We are upskilling residents to become business ready and signposting them onwards to support agencies that will assist them in launching and growing their business. Assisting people who want to start a business, test their ideas, and talk through their options and plans for the future. Providing a city centre space to promote and sell works created, by up and coming artists.

Steps to get it done:

  • Signing the lease
  • Launching the first program of training
  • Opening the 1st "Pop Up" Shop

At this point, anything and everything will be gratefully received, there is only so much we can do, and we have got this far, with the help of some fantastic people, we just need some more support from others to turn our vision into reality!
