Did you know that all the streets on Longhill are named after rivers? We want to celebrate this with community events in the City of Culture Year for Hull and make sure Longhill doesn't miss the boat!
Sorry this project was unsuccessful, we did not reach our fundraising goal.
We want to celebrate our community, centred around the Rivers of Life that our streets are named after. Bringing community groups, schools and neighbourhoods together, we will decorate our streets, make art, have a party and build a legacy for the environment - a boat-shaped raised bed for planting vegetables and flowers outside St Margaret's. St Margaret's Welcome Centre is already playing a key role in the community of Longhill, with its affordable cafe, community groups (including craft club, debt advice, tots group) library facilities, job seeking support, family activities and church services. We are very aware that there are many different aspects that help lives to flourish - yes there is the practical support that we give, but there is so much more to make life worth living - colour, humour, faith, hope, fun, creativity and community. Whilst celebrating all that 2017 has already brought to our city we have also come to realise that many from Longhill have not yet engaged.
What we'll deliver:
Why it's a great idea:
Like many communities, Longhill has lost many resources in terms of community development and cohesion, and without the capacity of the professionals, many feel that the community spirit has been weakened - but this isn't because people don't want to connect - far from it in fact. When one of our local inhabitants began to research and talk about the fact that the streets are all named after rivers a new energy and interest was sparked.... Here is our chance to celebrate our heritage and our community, to invite others to come and see who we really are and to feel like we're part of this vital year in our city. Our hope is that Don't Miss the Boat will enable our people and groups to do just that - not miss the Boat of 2017 because they don't think they have anything to offer, and we also hope that the Rivers of Life will start their trickle this year and continue to flow strongly i years to come
