Deptford Folk, the local community group that looks after Deptford parks and Lewisham Cyclists partnered up some years ago to run a community bike workshop once a month, using space hired from the local Scouts in their Scout Hut. The workshop has proved extremely popular, offering local people the chance to learn how to look after their bikes. We also take donated bikes and refurbish them to pass on to people on low incomes. In order to fulfil the community's demonstrated need for help with all things bike related, we want to refurbish a room as a bike workshop which will become a permanent space that we can open up, eventually full time, to continue the work we have been doing and to extend our service, offering repairs, bike skills and bike maintenance training to the local community.

What we'll deliver:

  • 1 room fitted out as a cycle workshop space
  • Tools and equipment for the cycle workshop

Why it's a great idea:

By offering bike skills maintenance training and cycle repairs, we enable people to choose active travel, to exercise more, which in turn benefits them personally and their environment, improving participant health outcomes and reducing congestion and pollution for everyone in the community. Our monthly workshops are always extremely busy and we often have to turn people away, due to lack of space and time.. People on lower incomes in the area, cannot afford to pay for cycle repairs, in regular bike shops, and recently demand for bike repairs and bike skills training has far exceeded the available supply. In our workshop, people can work on their bike with one of our qualified mechanics, learning at the same time about how to repair the cycle themselves in the future. We want to increase the skill sharing aspect of what we do and offer more structured bike maintenance training sessions to local people as well as led rides and urban bike riding skills training

Steps to get it done:

  • Clearing the space
  • Redecorating
  • Install workbenches and tool boards
  • Purchase tools
