The Environment, Leisure, and Residential Services division of RBKC is working with the Portobello and Golborne Road Market Traders, and the Westway Trust to deploy a reliable & robust free wifi service for all those who come to enjoy the Market. We are all joining forces for the first time to create a digital portal for social media to interact with the public and grow market and community awareness. Our goal is to promote our local vendors, artists, and goods. We will deploy a secure electronic payments system for the market traders for cashless transactions and increase our CCTV presence to promote safety in this area of massive footfall. We want visitors to enjoy what's on offer and be aware of the special events and promotions happening in the area.

What we'll deliver:

  • Install CCTV to ensure this area is safe and crowds are controlled
  • Install free and reliable WIFI from Portobello Rd through Golborne Rd
  • Create an App/Digital Portal for market content and social media

Why it's a great idea:

Connect the iconic Portobello Road! There is a genuine requirement for free wifi everywhere you go these days. We want Portobello Rd, Golborne Rd, and The Westway to become an interactive environment. We want people visiting to be able to connect with each other and not have to worry about data roaming (tourists). We want people to promote our market traders and local artists on social media and tell the World about their trip to the iconic Portobello Road. We want to go cashless and increase the speed in which transactions happen. Especially in the food market (empanadas and cronuts quicker!). We want to increase the peace of mind of visitors by ensuring their safety and security by installing CCTV in new areas, especially around the Notting Hill Carnival. We want the area to become an even bigger creative hub and would like more locals and visitors to enjoy their time down there by benefiting from a connected community.

Steps to get it done:

  • Chosing a vendor (local to Notting Hill) for digital activation
  • Chosing a vendor for the wireless deployment
