Lancaster City has around fifty green heritage plaques that commemorate important men and buildings in its area - but none to women! We want to address that imbalance and conducted a survey where we identified over thirty inspirational women -- and their stories - that we could honour. During 2021 we conducted a survey and identified over thirty local women from our area who had fascinating stories. However, the cost of a heritage plaque is around £650 each with additional costs for fixing and maintenance. We have two women that we would particularly like to erect plaques to: Annie Elizabeth Helme - a key player in setting up the Lancaster Suffragette Movement and the first woman Mayor of Lancaster - shorturl.at/eiNR2 Polly Blacow - Heysham's last woman mussel gatherer - shorturl.at/cFMWX Help us raise sufficient funds so that these women's achievements can be displayed for all to see by a heritage plaque in an appropriate place within the Lancaster and Morecambe area.

What we'll deliver:

• Purchase Green Heritage Plaques
• Install them on appropriate buildings
• Ongoing maintenance to ensure their condition

Why it's a great idea:

Currently we have put up one heritage plaque to Sr Aine Cox founder of the Lancaster Hospice Movement and are unveiling a further one to Janet Raby and Beatrice Parkinson, the last two women lighthouse keepers in the UK later in February. In March we will be installing a plaque to Jennie Harris, legendary footballer of Lancaster FC and Dick Kerr Ladies, at Lancaster Football Club. But there are so many more of these women whose names should be seen and honoured in and around our district.

All donations made will only be used in our Heritage Plaques for Women. If you wish to specify which woman you would like your money to be allocated to please state when donating.
