CMCSpace is to be set up in Deptford SE8. It will be a new creative and innovative workspace and service, to enable the design and manufacture of products that are derived directly from Deptford (and Greater London) grown timber and from the best renewable timber resources sourced from places like London lofts and housing stock. It is based in an area where there are high levels of deprivation and unemployment, combined with a high concentration of creative and resourceful people. Civic Makers Craft Space plans to bring these ingredients together to catalyze innovation and create opportunities with the aim of diverting what would be waste from disposal. Helping our local community increase their access to employment through the cultivation of skills and developing new networks. Provide a unique offering: with shared affordable workspaces, an educational space, and a support network for local enterprises and individuals creating one-off or small batch design products and opportunities.

What we'll deliver:

  • A milling system for the cutting cutting and slicing of trees.
  • A kiln for the drying of timbers.
  • A multi-functional Workshop.
  • A large Van to transport items.
  • A Trailer to transport the Work Tent.
  • Design and make locally 'top drawer' new products from wood

Why it's a great idea:

Our Mission is to put the Circular Economy into practice, which is to be restorative and regenerative by design, aiming to keep products, components and materials at their highest utility and value at all times. This business model responds to the opportunity to make better use of resources and redirect materials within the civic municipal and commercial waste streams. Maximizing carbon reduction and benefiting the local community through the building of skills, employment, innovation and self-reliance. We will implement the 3 R’s – Reduce > Reuse > Recycle – reclaiming what would have been previously lost to the waste stream, in to a new productive economy. The overall objective is nurture creative opportunities for skills, training and work locally in Deptford. In light of these issues, there is a social need to introduce an entity that performs activities that aims to reduce this waste in a sustainable manner. Our social mission is to get paid for local supplies of Green wood.

Steps to get it done:

  • Find pop up spaces to start our sessions

Our Business Model corresponds in use and resource with a civic and environmental stewardship that focuses on gaining the best quality timber waste by a number of different Circular Economy services. Products will be made with our mobile machinery workshop and facility while offering social values via skills in product design, making and business management. The products will then be sold at prices that are below recommended retail price (RRP) to offer a cheaper source for London-based made products. CMCSpace has four competitive advantages: 1. On average the products sold are 30% cheaper than that of our major competitor 2. Each customer purchase contributes to the reduction of carbon loss to the environment 3. They support London based products and services and encourage fair trade 4. The products are design to a high standard and give support to new product designers and makers. Producing highly crafted products from waste timber, and provide training opportunities.
