The experience of the Windrush generation, 1948-71, is becoming better appreciated on a national scale. A town such as Chorley in the north of England may seem remote to that story but our local oral history research has produced fascinating recordings of three people bringing their families from Jamaica post World War Two. We want to use display of their experiences as an encouragement to others to being forward their stories and memorabilia, which will enable us to mount a whole series of celebratory events between March and August 2023. For ten years we have campaigned for the creation of an inclusive heritage centre in Chorley. Our desire is that this project will help raise our profile, attract new and younger supporters and build partnerships with other agencies, such as Chorley Library which will host our drop-in sessions and exhibition, and other community groups, like the Windrush CIC, In sum we will deliver better service in community history and widen cultural access.

What we'll deliver:

  • Windrush Drop-in Day Chorley Library 1st March, with other days to follow
  • Exhibition " The Windrush Generation in Chorley" June and July- based on gathered memorabilia, transcripts and images
  • School visits to the Exhbition
  • Public lecture by e.g. Adrian Murrell
  • West Indian meal at a Chorley Community Centre

Why it's a great idea:

The project will enhance knowledge of Chorley's community history and give value and understanding of an area not traditionally explored by historians of the locality. There will be a greater use of the currently under-used community history/reference library in Chorley. There will be an increase in numbers, age range and the diversity of those involved in local history and our heritage group membership. The benefits of co-operative and partnership working will be demonstrated, strengthening the case for a multi-purpose heritage centre. It will add to the Chorley heritage Group's materials, volunteering and organisational expertise.

Steps to get it done:

  • June 1st 2023- Library Exhibition in situ- based upon experiences collected since 1st March
