Caulms Wood Outdoor Classroom

Friends of Caulms Wood By Friends of Caulms Wood

We want our young people to be able to explore and learn within the park. An outdoor classroom will give them a space to enjoy nature, learn about the environment and spend more time outdoors.

This project was funded on 27 May 2020!

In the centre of the park there is an existing structure built in 1985 as a rose garden. We want to turn this circular structure into an open, outdoor classroom with 8 sleeper benches in the centre to seat a class full of students. Students will be able to spend time with their teachers in the woods, then return to the outdoor classroom to make notes, share ideas, or plan future visits. The space will be clean, clear and open to the public to use as well as local schools.

What we'll deliver:

  • 8 sleeper benches
  • 10 gabion steel cages
  • 1 Story Chair

Why it's a great idea:

This outdoor classroom will provide a space for outdoor learning. There are 3 primary schools on the hill on which Caulms Wood sits. These three schools have little to no green outdoor space. Their students - around 500 children, are restricted in their outdoor play. They can't climb trees, or see wildlife in its natural habitat - birds, squirrels, hedgehogs. This space will allow students to sit and enjoy nature in a structured space akin to a classroom. Just outside!

Steps to get it done:

  • Clearing the site of growth and rubbish
  • Start Crowdfunding campaign
  • Buying Gabion cages
  • Placing Gabion cages for retaining wall
  • Schools filling the cages to create bug hotels
  • Buying and placing benches into the space
  • First class to use the outdoor classroom
