Empowering people to improve their green spaces, enhance their environment, and boost wellbeing.
Campaign is called Mind the Wrap. In the UK alone we throw away around 100 million rolls of gift wrap paper after Christmas. For many, gift wrap is often an unconscious purchase & something that can easily be replaced with more sustainable alternatives. Campaign will also benefit from & build on the current momentum around plastic waste by highlighting another small change people can make that will have an impact. Funds raised will be awarded to UK schools, colleges and universities who sucessfully deliver the campaign within their organisation or local community. Details are to be worked out but the idea is that each participating insititution will run a competition for the best 'Mind the Wrap' campaign and the funds I raise will be given to the winning teams.
What we'll deliver:
Why it's a great idea:
It will help cut down on a lot of unnecessary waste going to landfills and incinerators every year, especially around Christmas. In the UK alone, we throw away around 100 million rolls of gift wrap paper after Christmas. In the US, it's estimated that 4 million tons of waste over the holidays is made up of wrapping paper and shopping bags - this amounts to about 30 million trees cut down. Even if you question or ignore the statistics, look around shops and online at how much wrapping paper is on sale all year. A search of Amazon UK for shiny wrapping paper returns over 700 results. Is it right to create so much waste year after year for something we usually use only once? Why do we spend so much money and resource on something that is fundamentally rubbish?
Steps to get it done:
Other than the student competition already mentioned, below are the main things I'm currently doing for the campaign. - A simple landing page to spread the word. This is almost done and will be launched by mid-July 2019: https://p.strikingly.com/sites/12477490/preview?token=QVVab01UNXBSMmtwdFJ4QXQ2dCtuZzF6OUIyYXRYa01haFJWV0MzVHg1ZVZic2pkTUxuSjBXWkRQTHFpbUo0UmJQWXdOK2gzaHRXc240bzhmdkNLeHNFQ0RCL2lKaGpmeFUvUDRv - Social media accounts will be lauched by September 2019. I'm seeking volunteers to run the campaign on social media as I am not really a social media person. - Newspapers: I'm contacting newspapers to get them to promote their papers for wrapping in time for Christmas. No luck so far but I will keep trying. I think they will be more open to discussion once I've got the website running. - I've just set up a project page on Crowdfunder too for the same reason (student competition): https://www.crowdfunder.co.uk/mind-the-wrap---a-campaign-to-reduce-single-use-wr
