We want to open a shop with space for people to learn new skills whilst giving local artists the chance to display their work in an area of high footfall in a busy market town. Initially we are looking to fund a 2 month arts festival in an empty shop which will give us the chance to connect with the target markets, both in terms of selling hand made items but also to see what need there is for activities for vulnerable members of our community.
What we'll deliver:
Why it's a great idea:
This 2 month festival will allow us to test the water and see what will work and what won't work and will be used to form the basis of an application to the Arts Council and other bodies for longer term funding.
Since Otley lost it's college we have no further education in the town and young parents who want to return to work often find it hard to travel into Leeds and Bradford to access basic skills courses. Long term we hope that we can rent a shop in the town centre and we can link with local colleges to run these courses along side running craft fairs, business advice sessions, therapeutic arts and crafts workshops, kids classes and provide work placements to help young parents get back into work.
The main aim in all of this though is to build links between different sectors of the community.
