Each year we aim to take a team of children who have all had kidney transplants, and their families, to the British Transplant games.

The British Transplant games allows the children and their families to receive support and encouragement from other families who have been through the unique journey of kidney transplantation whilst promoting sport and healthy living in a fun environment. For some of our families this is their only chance for a holiday and dedicated family time.
To enable this to take place we endeavour to help fund the accommodation for the children and one parent/carer, we ask that they self-fund for siblings and other adults. We also aim to pay for the event fees to participate in the games activities.

Why it's a great idea:
The physical health benefits of sports and health promotion, along with the emotional support and sense of achievement can be seen. It is recognised that 1/3 of all children who start kidney replacement therapy have at least one other significant problem. They have restricted growth. All of these are due to the effects of the underlying illness, medication, and lifestyle that children on dialysis and post-transplant have. Pre-transplantation they are unable to attend schooling regularly, struggle to join in extracurricular activities, and are limited in energy to play with their friends. Sport is recognised as improving weight management, improving heart function and therefore reducing the risk factors for heart disease that these children have. Finding ways to improve their quality of life and long term survival are vital. Encouraging healthy lifestyles and the positive effects of sport are one key message we can share through Team Great Bristol at the transplant games.

VolunteerEach year we aim to take a team of children who have all had kidney transplants, and their families, to the British Transplant games. In 2015 there will be 12 children as part of ‘’Team GB’’ (Team Great Bristol) and the games are being held in Newcastle.
The Bristol Royal Hospital for Children renal (kidney) unit covers Bristol and the whole of south-west England. In addition we take children from South Wales for renal transplantation. Kidney failure can occur from birth, or develop progressively through childhood. It can also occur acutely due to accidents or secondary to other conditions. Therefore a service which supports babies from the first days of their lives, through childhood, adolescence and the transition into adulthood is required. This offers unique challenges.
In children with chronic kidney disease the whole body is affected. When a child goes into chronic kidney failure, they experience faltering growth, anaemia, poor appetite, altered taste sensation, strict dietary and fluid requirements and lethargy. These all affect their ability to join in sports and physical activities. In addition they have changes to bone density, hormone imbalances and blood pressure problems. Managing the complexities associated with all these problems requires frequent hospital appointments, injections, medications and eventually dialysis and transplantation, which the families manage. This causes a great burden and affects all their lives, work and friendships.
Transplantation is recognised as the gold standard of therapy for these children. Whilst a new kidney is not a cure, it is a lifeline which allows them to experience a life much closer to that of their peers. They are still required to attend frequent hospital appointments and take a range of medications; however they have energy, grow and can eat and drink more freely. Kidney transplants tend to last 10-15 years so some of these children will require second transplants in later childhood.
Therefore creating positive life experiences that allow them to focus on fun, good health and meeting other people is invaluable to them all.
