This TYS project is to create easy to navigate walkways to Acton Town Centre, connecting Churchfield Road, Crown Street and The Mount with architectural features, innovative lighting and landscaping.

We propose to create continuity across Acton Town Centre, starting with Churchfield Road and connecting it to the rest of the Town Centre, to make it entirely accessible, with sufficient space for everyone, including those using scooters, buggies or wheelchairs. These improved spaces will give us an opportunity to enjoy the ever expanding choices of local cafes and shops on Churchfield Road, The Mount, and subsequently on the High Street and Crown Street. The Mount, at the heart of Acton Town Centre, has the potential to showcase our communities’ passion for art and culture through carefully selected architectural features, creative use of lighting and landscaping. Small design changes can make a big difference. We believe this project will connect our town like never before and make it a fantastic place to live, shop, play and do business. Why it's a great idea:
We want to make Acton Town Centre a more attractive and enjoyable place to be for shopping, meeting friends and community events. Our proposal will allow more public events to take place and display public art across the Town Centre. Investing in attractive paving will create a better connection and opportunity for outdoor cafes and easy access to shops. Lighting to highlight historical features and architectural details will deter anti-social behaviour and improve safety, while showcasing Acton’s unique architectural identity and its heritage as the Oak Town. A thriving, attractive market in our Town Square is an important asset to the area economically, providing opportunities for local businesses. Socially, a more diverse market offering will encourage different communities to talk to each other. Trees play a vital role in our towns providing numerous environmental, economic and social benefits, creating the kind of places people want to live, work, visit and invest in.
Steps to get it done:
We already have:
- Set up a working group with representation from business and residents associations in Acton and working in partnership with Ealing Council.
- Engaged residents to gather design ideas.
- Gathered initial support at local ward forums and the Council
- Worked with Ealing Council and urban designers to come up with initial concept and defined a comprehensive community engagement plan
- Secured initial ward funding for parts of the proposal, such as the information board on the Mount and a cycle lane at Market Place.
This proposal will leverage a wider access to funding sources, including the Mayor's High Street Regeneration Fund.

VolunteerMill Hill Park Residents’ Association (MHPRA - http://millhillparkacton.org/) is a dynamic, volunteer-led, multi-cultural residents’ association in the Mill Hill Park Conservation Area in South Acton. We are passionate about building our community, the conservation and enhancement of our architectural heritage and green spaces, and about representing our members’ interests not only in Mill Hill Park but in Acton as a whole.
In building our community, we have:
- Held regular, popular social events, including an exhibition of Russian art and showcasing members’ musical talents and donated those talents to three charitable Jambo Jambo concerts at St Mary’s Church
- Organised summer garden parties and picnics aimed at younger members with children
In furthering conservation and the enhancement of green spaces, we have:
- Successfully obtained funding for a renovation of the Pocket Garden on Crown Street, in collaboration with Ealing Council and local designers, creating a community-managed green space for residents and passers-by to enjoy.
- Planted and maintained a Community Orchard, coupled with a number of other improvements in Heathfield Nature Garden in partnership with Ealing Transition and Ealing Council Parks team
- Supported local garden designers who open their gardens through the charitable National Gardens Scheme
- Campaigned successfully to save the historic, local landmark, the Mill Hill Tavern
- Worked with Acton History Group to lead architectural walks of Acton’s historic sites and contributed to their magazine
- Held a competition for ‘Most Attractive Property’ and offered professional gardening advice (‘Garden Angels’) to encourage smartening of property facades and front gardens in our area
In representing members’ wider interests in Acton, we have:
- Successfully spearheaded a campaign to make Acton Town Centre greener by planting 50 trees, with the support from Ealing Council and Churchfield Community Association
- Actively contributed to Ealing Council’s Conservation Area Panel
- Effectively represented members’ views in connection with TFL’s ‘Corridor Improvements’
We are a confident, effective organisation, successfully working with local Councillors, Ealing Council, other residents’ associations and anyone whose activities affect or can improve our lives.
