We want to take over an empty shop, decorate it as a Winter Wonderland and have a Santa's Grotto provided by volunteers on the three Fridays and Saturdays before Christmas. The first of these Saturdays will be a festive celebration, with stalls, performances and attractions and fireworks to encourage shoppers.

What we'll deliver:

• We will work with local businesses, schools, the University and students to make the day special for all
• We will pay for a local brass band, reindeer and fireworks
• We will purchase artifical snow, christmas trees, lights and other large decorations for the winter wonderland.
• We will purchase costumes for Santa, elves and other characters

Why it's a great idea:

Since Bangor lost its cinema, arts centre and many high street shops in the recession, the People of Bangor Community Group has worked with others to give Bangor things to be proud of. The festive celebration brings together local English and Welsh speakers, students studying in Bangor from all over the UK and the world, and the community, business, churches and education sectors. Previous events have attracted many people, but have relied on volunteer fundraising and grants from the local and county council to break even. Funding from public bodies is not available now, so to keep the momentum going we are seeking other forms of support.

Steps to get it done:

• We have some reserves and expect to raise about £1,000 through community fundraising
• We have support from many schools and groups in the city who join in the fun
• We have a dedicated and experienced team who would welcome more volunteers to share the load!
• We have negotiated a free shop unit in a shopping centre in the middle of the city
