We will run an intensive summer school for disadvantaged communities, including BAME children, and youth from low-income families. Our main beneficiaries will come from Barnet and surrounding areas. The project includes 3 hours per week Maths and English classes and 3 hours per week enrichment activity programme that encourages children and young people to engage in play by offering a range of materials and ideas to inspire and challenge them. We will provide challenging, exciting and fun sessions such as art and craft, performing arts as well as sports activities such as football, basketball, athletics and table tennis. We will also visit the Museum of London, provide a daily minibus service from pick up points in Barnet, serving sandwiches, snacks and refreshments during lunch break and organise a reward assembly and celebration with the parents at the end of the programme.

What we'll deliver:

  • Provide an intensive Summer School over a month
  • Teach English and Maths for 45 students over a month
  • Provide weekly enrichment activities (museum visit, performing arts club etc)
  • Serve sandwiches, snacks and refreshments during the program
  • Assembly and celebration with the parents at the end of the programme
  • Provide a daily minibus service from pick up points in Barnet

Why it's a great idea:

The Summer School Project will bring the following benefits to BAME Youth; • an effective, challenging, stimulating and fun activity program during the summer school holiday • offering a valuable respite for families • providing a safe, structured environment for children and young people. • an opportunity to learn, try new activities, build friendships, relax, We aim to have the following impact on participants during the project; • boosting academic performance, • reducing risky behaviours, • promoting physical health, • improving emotional and social development Besides, the parents we consulted stated that they could not afford to register their kids to expensive holiday programmes; however, they still knew the positive effect of holiday activities involving academic and enjoyable sessions on the children’s attainment, self-confidence, and progress. Lastly, our project will also keep the children safely away from the streets on holiday when parents have less control.

Steps to get it done:

  • Attract students and complete their pre-registration
  • Recruit staff and select resources
  • Implement formative and summative assessments and give feedback and report
  • Celebrate success, respond to feedback and improve the programme
