Awaaz FM Community Radio

Me2You Radio By Me2You Radio

To promote for the benefit of the inhabitants of Southampton (particularly but not exclusively of Pakistani, Indian, and European origin) the provision of a community radio

Southampton Delivery stage

£4,200
pledged of £31,217

Sorry this project was unsuccessful, we did not reach our fundraising goal.

The CIC's objects (the Objects) are: To promote for the benefit of the inhabitants of Southampton (particularly but not exclusively of Pakistani, Indian, and European origin) the provision of a community radio as a recreational facility for individuals who have need of such a facility by reason of their youth, age, infirmity or disablement, financial hardship or social and economic circumstances or for the public at large in the interests of social welfare and with the object of improving the condition of life of the said inhabitants; To advance education in particular vocational education and training in radio broadcasting and media skills, techniques and work; To promote equality and diversity for the benefit of the public and in particular by promoting good relations between people in the United Kingdom who are of differing racial, cultural or ethnic backgrounds and by providing information to those who may have difficulty in enforcing their rights

What we'll deliver:

  • We will educate and train members of the community on the radio
  • We will promote VCSO and Statutory organisations who currently find it difficult to reach out to BAME communities
  • We will reach out to the wider community through the media

Why it's a great idea:

The need for Awaaz FM Community Radio is shown by the lack of a platform for the BAME community. Problems include the low number of BAME entrants into the jobs or education market and little or no uptake of media related subjects. The local youth are pessimistic about their future and there are growing instances of Anti-Social behaviour

Steps to get it done:

  • Minority ethnic older people experience improved psychological and physical well-being.
  • Minority ethnic people, particularly of BAME origin, are less isolated

Members of these communities have no recreation facilities and morale is low especially with the younger generation who do not achieve well in education or employment. As such, the identified areas have become areas of high deprivation, low employment and high poverty indices. There are high instances of isolation, depression and low morale in the local population. Finally, there is low integration and high segregation between communities, the project will attempt to be a catalyst for better community cohesion and the reduction of localised tension.
