Twelve community groups of Tottenham will be profiled - one per month – with profits shared among each. The calendar will be a daily reminder of the positive assets and spirit of the area.

Thanks to the riots of August 2011 the world tends to think negatively of Tottenham. We will work with young people of the area to show a brighter side, and to enhance their pride in their community. With our help, they will photograph and interview individuals and organisations who contribute time and energy to offering a service to local people. They will be telling the good news stories, in other words!

Often the 'unsung heroes' earn little, but contribute much to community cohesion and to improving the quality of life or long-term prospects of local residents. This well-designed attractive product will have an everyday practical function and funds raised will be reinvested into the community groups profiled and help them to continue with what they do.

What we'll deliver:

  • Produce a calendar that celebrates community cohesion
  • Sell calendar through Tottenham Traders and other outlets and reinvest profits in the community
  • Visit, interview and photograph 12 local community groups
  • Work with young people to write and illustrate 12 profiles of these community groups

Why it's a great idea:

It is a simple idea. The most important feature - the unique selling point - is that the Ashes to Assets calendar highlights the contributions of the small groups that make the big difference.

Production values will be high, and young people will be involved every step of the way, giving them valuable experience in writing, photography and design.

Profits, which we estimate will be between £2,000 and £3,000, will be reinvested into community groups and we will invite them, the local schools and traders, to help us get this calendar on the wall of every home in Tottenham – and beyond!

Steps to get it done:

  • We ourselves have editorial, design and facilitation expertise and years of experience in project managing
  • We will additionally offer an intensive week of 'work experience' to source the stories and photographs
  • It is a spin-off from our online magazine so we will use our existing editorial team of young people to produce it
  • We have been already been working alongside various community groups in 2012 including Tottenham Traders showcases work done in 2012 with young people of Haringey.
