Arts Against Isolation with Make Town

Mortar Studios By Mortar Studios

We are helping our older residents in Hackney recover from the impact of Covid-19 with the delivery of arts and crafts materials to their home and workshops hosted by our studio residents at Make Town

Sorry this project was unsuccessful, we did not reach our fundraising goal.

Our older residents have struggled enormously with loneliness and isolation during the pandemic with many of them shielding alone at home. We are working in collaboration with Make Town and our network of designers and makers to create fabulous arts and crafts packs that are distributed to the doorsteps of our older residents, providing them with activities and social engagement at home! Our packs include video and printed instructions, equipment and all the materials required to participate in workshops with online meetup sessions to socialise with one another. Workshops include linocut and printmaking masterclass, Japanese quilting and stitch techniques with many more! Our project will reach over 200 residents, delivering engagement with the arts and creative events, helping us to build confidence and social skills as we work to bring people back into physical settings for our workshops as the vaccine effort takes effect.

What we'll deliver:

  • 200 workshop places
  • 30 downloadable patterns
  • 5 artist/designers supported
  • Launch event
  • 3 Walk N Wonder exhibitions of the workshop content
  • Developing a strategy for workshop engagement

Why it's a great idea:

By delivering arts and crafts packs to over 200 older residents in Hackney we are supporting them with social activities and confidence-building at this crucial time. 42% of our older residents in Hackney have been living on their own throughout the pandemic. Loneliness and isolation have had serious detrimental effects on the wellbeing of our Hackney Circle members, impacting both their physical and mental health. 67% of those that participated in our pilot project experienced a reduction in feeling lonely or isolated. Our project highlights the vital role that the arts and crafts can play in bringing our community together and massively expands the socialising opportunities we are able to deliver. We are adapting how we are providing resources, time and social space for our older residents to deliver better engagement with the arts, supporting how we are best able to bring people back into physical settings as the vaccine effort takes effect.

Steps to get it done:

  • Workshop content development completed with Make Town
  • Creation of printed marketing materials
  • Confirmation of workshop participants
  • Creation of workshop packs
  • Volunteers distribution of workshop packs
  • Delivery of online meetup sessions
  • Exhibition launch

We have been working with our partner Hackney Council on supporting and developing the Hackney Circle, the council-led, free membership scheme that connects Hackney’s older residents to the arts and culture. In Hackney the growth of the older population is higher than the rest of London. By 2025 it is expected that there will be 24,154 residents aged 65 and over. We have therefore designed our Arts Against Isolation project to complement the borough’s Art and Cultural Strategy and Ageing Well strategy. We want to make sure that the arts and crafts can support our health care services and we have been getting the advice of our Clinical Commissioning Group in Hackney about how our workshops and activities can help reduce the pressure on primary care services. Arts Against Isolation highlights this crucial relationship between arts and cultural organisations and our health care services and seeks to build a longstanding framework and network for delivering art and crafts initiatives
