Petticoat Lane, famous for its colourful textile market, is also home to the Middlesex Street Estate, a tower and a block of flats arranged around a podium, with a close-knit community. Turkish Artist Güneş Terkol will collaborate with residents to create a new mural on one of the Estate’s outer walls. This permanent art work will be made for the residents to be proud of, and passersby to enjoy. In addition, Terkol will conduct a series of free workshops inviting the local community to create a large-scale textile banner which will be publicly displayed on Whitechapel High Street, on the night of the event. Both works will be unveiled during Art Night 2017, on the 1st of July. In its second edition, the free festival, curated by Fatoş Üstek, aims to celebrate the diversity of the residents of London’s East End.

What we'll deliver:

  • Make: The artist will host free textile and sewing workshops for the community
  • Show: The banner will be displayed on Art Night and the mural will stay permanently for everyone to enjoy
  • Exchange: Local residents will engage in conversation with the artist to create a permanent mural for the Estate
  • Imagine: A large textile banner and a permanent mural which will be inspired by life on the Estate and the neighbourhood

Why it's a great idea:

Art Night is a free festival of contemporary art in extraordinary spaces. Each year, a leading cultural institution and curator are invited to work in a different area of London, exploring its history, culture and architecture. The festival seeks not only to activate the area for one night but also to leave a legacy and empower the residents of Middlesex Street Estate and local community, through the project of Güneş Terkol. The artist will engage in discussions with the residents and conduct workshops, in order to inspire collaboration. She will create a space for them to reflect their expectations, dreams and concerns, their life on the Estate and their relationship to the neighbourhood, rich in History of migration and trade.

Steps to get it done:

  • April: Raise funds for materials, production, workshops and fees
  • May: Host workshops and feed-in sessions, where the banner will be created and mural designed
  • 1 July: Art Night, when the banner will be displayed and the mural unveiled
  • June: Realisation of the mural

The mural will be visible to passers-by, and be particularly busy on Sundays when the Petticoat Lane Market is on. The banner created during the workshops will be displayed at The Cass, London Metropolitan University for Art Night, alongside other major projects by leading international artists. The project is made in association with Aldgate Community Events.
