Acton Gardens For All

Acton Gardens For All

Cultivate London By Cultivate London

We want to identify areas of outdoor spaces and places within the South Acton estate that have fallen into neglect and give these spots a new lease of life.

We are currently working with local residents to select sites within the estate, and to obtain all relevant approvals to deliver the project. We have currently agreed 70% of these, but the rest will be announced at a later date. We aim to clear overgrown areas and replace with flower beds, fruit bushes and seating areas. There has always been an abundance of nesting birds within South Acton but with the changing housing stock and more dense new builds going up this has been decreasing, so we will install nesting boxes across the remaining communal spaces. We also want to create small space and gardening mentors from some of the expert residents to help people use their new balconies to maximum effect and to ensure it remains welcoming for wildlife. The leaves from the street trees across the estate are currently removed from the area but with a number of strategically located leaf stores across the estate. Leaf mould can be created and shared by local gardening folk.

What we'll deliver:

  • Uncover, replant and refurbish the seating within the gardens outside Glamis tower
  • Install nesting boxes accross the estate
  • Create leaf collection stations across the estate
  • Paint concrete planters within the redbrick estate and enhance flowers with colour

Why it's a great idea:

These areas within the grounds of the South Acton estate are caught within the old estate and the new development. We can use of the space available and create resource out of a problem with the creation leaf mould and also ensure that there is continuity and a legacy of wildlife with nesting boxes and fruit bushes. We will allow the members of the old Acton estate who have gardening knowledge and passion, the opportunity to share this by mentoring others who want to grow their gardens on the estate.

Steps to get it done:

  • Clearing and cutting back vegetation and levelling ground
  • Purchasing sleepers, posts, paint, varnish and plants
  • Installing leaf bays
  • Hold 3-5 community project days to tidy areas, paint planters, recover wooden garden furniture and plant
  • Host seasonal partner/ volunteer sessions at Cultivate London site in Acton to upskill volunteers
  • 1 x annual meeting of Acton gardens for all group at Cultivate London site or community centre to review and plan
