At present The Sharks, store all their kit at Three Bridges School in Southall. However, the bank on that side is too high to access the canal, meaning that all the kit has to be carried over a narrow bridge. What we want is to buy a pontoon, that will enable us to access the canal from the school site. This will make operating our very popular sessions easier for everyone, enabling us to run more sessions more often and get more people having fun whilst being active.

What we'll deliver:

  • A pontoon on the School side of the canal
  • School sessions for all local schools
  • More public access sessions
  • Increase participation for local people

Why it's a great idea:

Pupils at the School will have easy access to canoeing activities. Other local schools will be able to enjoy canoeing from a safe location. Other local groups will be able to try canoeing as part of their activities. Local people will be able to take up the sport of canoeing, for recreation, for fun, and for those who wish to; serious athletic sport.

Steps to get it done:

  • Installation of pontoon

Between April and October we often have over 100 people taking part in canoeing at this location. However, the logistical difficulties means we are limited to what we can do, and our costs are high (we have to pay staff extra hours to move kit about, instead of teaching). The pontoon will enable easy access for all. We can invite more local schools to participate, we have already spoken with them and know they want to. We will be able to expand our work with Let’s Go Southall, who bring 40 people to sessions on a regular basis. We will be able to get more local groups, holiday clubs, Scouts, youth and community groups involved We will be able to get more local people active on the water more often at affordable prices. Southall will get a great canoeing facility in the heart of the community
