I set up The Aaron James Dixon Memorial Fund when I lost my only son Aaron at the age of 23 to an undetected heart defect. 12 young adults lose their lives every single week to an undetected heart defect and my aim is to save those young adults. A simple ECG would detect those defects thus saving lives and this is when I made the decision to start fundraising to help save young lives. Each Screening Day costs £5,000.00 where 100 young adults aged 14-35 are screened. This service is carried out by the Charity Cardiac Risk in the Young. The Screening Day involves completing a medical questionnaire, an ECG, consultation with the Cardiologist and an Echocardiogram if required on the day.

What we'll deliver:

  • 100 young adults screened aged between 14-35 years of age

Why it's a great idea:

There is no national screening programme for this condition which impacts on many thousands of people each year. I established Aaron's Memorial Fund after losing my son. I have built up an active network of businesses and individuals over the last 10 years who have helped me fund screening days. Screening is only available because families like my own have made the decision to raise funds to undertake this critical service and minimise the number of people dying from unknown heart conditions. I actively engage with many organisations such as Cheshire Football Association, Cheshire West & Chester Council, Local Schools & Sports Clubs and The English Institute of Sport in order to raise awareness. I am extremely proud of what I have achieved over the past decade and now aim to take screening into all high schools in Cheshire. To date 4,100 young adults in Cheshire have been screened, 135 referred with abnormalities who have gone on to have a heart transplant, heart surgery or medication.

Steps to get it done:

My aim is to have all young adults screened in Cheshire until such time as a National Screening Programme is introduced. I could not save my son from something I knew nothing about, but I can help to save other young lives and stop other families going through the heartache we face as a family everyday.
