We want to purchase and install three substantial FSC certified wooden mounting blocks at locations within Delamere Forest. The Forest is a popular area for both local and visiting horse riders, and Forestry England provides many off road multi-user tracks that can be enjoyed by them. Riders can lower the risk of injury to themselves and their horses by raising themselves on a mounting block to safely get onto their horses. Providing a mounting block at the main parking areas for horseboxes and trailers will help facilitate safe access and act as an encouragement for horse riders to come into the area and enjoy the Forest and its surroundings.
What we'll deliver:
- 3 substantial 3 step mounting blocks, made from FSC certified wood
Why it's a great idea:
During mounting a rider is at particular risk of any movement of the horse. A sudden move, such as from the horse being startled, can result in serious injury to the rider as falling is the most likely outcome.
The risk in mounting may be further raised by the rider’s age, agility, relative size to the horse or a disability. Mounting from the ground is not recommended because of the strain it puts on the horse and a
saddle, potentially causing injury to the animal and it may also cause injury to the rider or pain from common health conditions such as arthritis. Riders therefore try to lower the risk of mounting by raising themselves in relation to the horse, ideally using a sturdy mounting block. The provision of mounting blocks at key locations where horse riders will park their vehicles, opens up access to safe riding routes -especially for older, less agile or disabled riders. Delamere Forest is a very popular location for horse riders, who enjoy exploring off-road routes.
Steps to get it done:
- Purchase of mounting blocks
- Arranging delivery and installation
- Celebrating and publicising installation with Forestry England, MCBA members and others
Mounting blocks also serve as a visual marker to other users and visitors at Delamere Forest, reminding them that the facilities are also enjoyed by horse riders so they are aware that they may encounter horses using multi user routes. We will be installing substantial 3-step mounting blocks that have steps on both sides. These are safer for riders to use as if their horse moves forward before they mount they can walk down the steps to ground level to regain control. 3 steps provide a good height for less agile riders or those with a disability to mount from.
