Southport Model Railway Society saved and then restored the derelict original 1847 railway station. Since then the seaside weather of wind and rain has taken its toll on the structure and two years ago, Network Rail, the buildings' owner took the initiative to undertake a full external renovation of the building using contemporary materials. This restoration did not include the interior of the building which the Society is responsible for. In order to make the building safe to allow the admittance of members of the public, the Society need to upgrade the interior including modernization of the electrical system. The Society plans to undertake this electrical upgrade work using the crowdfunding and improve the internal and external environment of this very historic building including the garden which was the vegetable patch for the original station master so that the building can be opened to members of the public during the society's talks and for heritage and cultural events.

What we'll deliver:

  • Modernise the electrical system to make it safe for visitors
  • Improve the garden area with planting and paving
  • internal redecoration

Why it's a great idea:

Very few stations survive from the 1840's, but we are fortunate that by a quirk of fate (the original line being extended around the corner into the present site of Southport station in Chapel Street), Southport's original Eastbank Lane Station has survived. Although Southport Model Railway Society restored the building in 1987, and Network Rail recently restored it externally, the interior is not at present safe to receive visitors, and the anticipated crowdfunded work will allow this. The building is currently normally open twice a week to members on Tuesday evenings and Thursday mornings and on these occasions we will be happy to show it to interested members of the public. We will also make it available for heritage events in the town. Additionally we run regular talks on railway history subjects when the building will also be accessible to members of the public.

Steps to get it done:

  • Replace the electricity distribution board
  • Renew the internal wiring and lighting as appropriate
  • Redecorate and renew if necessary the damaged internal plasterwork
  • Imrove the garden
