Merrilocks Park is a small Park in the Blundellsands L23 area, close to the Beach by Hall Road Station. It dates back to 1870, and was part of the Blundell family estate, prior to Sefton Council's ownership. The Friends of Merrilocks Park began in 2019, a group of local residents who came together to restore a sadly neglected Park and return it to its former glory! Questionnaires at Coffee Mornings showed that local residents most wanted to see the Railings replaced. The Railings will prevent people from walking, and sometimes cycling, through the borders, and damaging valuable plants that cannot easily be replaced . Everyone in the community uses the Park e.g. walkers, joggers and cyclists; the Park is very popular with families and young children, and the railings would protect children from the roads surrounding the Park. Replacing the Railings would mark the final phase of the restoration of the Park! A wonderful achievement to be celebrated by the whole community!
What we'll deliver:
- Galvanised steel railings in front of the Serpentine Road Border
- Galvanised steel railings in front of the Merrilocks Road Border
- Galvanised steel railings around the Top 'V' End of the Park
Why it's a great idea:
Once installed, the Railings would :
1. provide protection for the plants, preventing people from walking, and sometimes cycling, through the borders.
2. provide a safer environment for children, by giving them added protection from running into the roads surrounding the Park.
3. provide a cultural focus for the Park by using the railings to display Artwork by local Schoolchildren and Artists, as part of an Exhibition 'ARTS DAY IN THE PARK' held in the Spring/Summer.
5. through fundraising events, encourage local residents to become Friends of Merrilocks Park, and help with the ongoing future maintenance of the Park
6. raise the 'profile' of the Park as a valuable, green space area, promoting the health and wellbeing of Park users through joining in social, leisure, and workshop activities held.
Steps to get it done:
- Replacement of Railings in front of the Merrilocks Road Border
- Replacement of Railings around the Top end of the Park
- Replacement of railings in front of the Serpentine Road North border - achieved
The Friends of Merrilocks Park (FMP) obtained grants from Tesco, Marine Football Club, West Lancashire Golf Club and the Jamie Carragher Trust to replant the Park. Replacing the Railings would protect this costly investment in plants, and once again the Park would have Railings, as photographs dating back to 1870 show. The success of the SpaceHive project would mark the final phase of the Restoration of the Park. A great achievement, made possible by generous sponsors such as yourselves!
