We organise inspirational 1 day events in different boroughs in London to achieve 4 objectives: 1. To give young black men and black boys hope. 2. To give organisations that are doing great work with young people a platform to speak and showcase what they do. 3. To connect these organisations with our target audience so that they can provide them with continuing mentorship post event. 4. To connect different local organisations together so that they can provide an even stronger provision for those that need it. Our events include inspirational talks, workshops and fitness sessions from people who know how to engage young people. So our target audience have the opportunity to develop their mental, physical and emotional fitness from attending our events. We did two events in the London Borough of Croydon last year. We had 150 people attend and 100 were within our target audience and now we want to do a similar thing in Ealing.
What we'll deliver:
Why it's a great idea:
There were 136 murders in London in 2018, 21 of the victims were teenagers and 15 (71%) of those were black boys. The total number of 10-25 year old males killed in 2018 was 45 and 53 in 2019. This is by far the most affected age group. Although information is not provided on the ethnicity of the victims, it is fair to assert from the names and photos of those killed (aged 10-25 years) that a majority were black males. We are dealing with the source of youth violence and knife crime. We want to provide inspiration, hope and a shift of mindset. This will transform the lives of the next generation. We think this is a powerful solution and that is why this project is a great idea. We also want to connect organisations that are doing great work together so they can leverage their resources and learnings to make an even bigger impact. Our events are based on the '5 Ways to Wellbeing' model. This is a model used by the NHS and many other prominent organisations.
Steps to get it done:
How the '5 Ways' model translate to our events: 1. Connect - we support young people to connect. 2. Be Active - we encourage them to be physically active through our workshops. 3. Keep Learning - we provide an environment for them to learn and develop their minds. 4. Help Others - We provide an environment and create a mindset that helps others. 5. Take Notice - we empower them to take notice of the present and appreciate being in the present.
