The project will allow for the creation of a green space for people to enjoy, meet, play and appreciate art. The mural artwork will change on a yearly basis will involve local artists to offer positive design that resonates with our community. We propose that the first mural production is supported by this project, whilst the curation and production in the following years being supported by Mad Atelier within the London Design Festival frame. The grounds will host an Aromatic Herbs Wall which will show herbs on a vertical plan, from this country and beyond and offer an olfactive experience to visitors. We propose ludic activities such as a Boules Court and a Ping Pong table. These activities promote social gatherings and gentle physical activity. The experience will be completed by fixed furniture that will be the expression of local designers for a carefully curated urban lounge, wooden pathways and landscaped mini gardens of plants and wild flowers.

Why it's a great idea:
The project will change a currently underused area into a community green and creative oasis. It will allow for locals to experience a landscaped green space, have fun and exercise while interacting with design and art. The creative community, strong in the area, will be involved in the mural art programme and the urban furniture and as such will have an opportunity to participate to the shaping of our neighbourhood. By allowing a slower experience of the now challenging junction of Lower Clapton Road and Urswick Road, it will benefit local businesses making this part of Lower Clapton more than a transit zone. A destination for rest, fun and art and design enjoyment.

VolunteerWe are Mad Atelier, a small independent business in Hackney, house to an architecture & design studio and to a furniture & interiors shop. Established by Italian architect Chantal Martinelli and her French husband Julien Desormeaux, Mad Atelier is a little pocket of Mediterranean style transported to London’s East End.
Opened in late 2017 on Lower Clapton Road, the store specialises in hand-selected playful pieces by contemporary designers, as well as vintage finds picked up by Chantal and Julien from galleries in Milan, Paris and Barcelona. The mix is constantly evolving as the duo discover new workshops, studios and craftspeople to collaborate with, often on exclusive pieces.
A reflection of Chantal and Julien’s instincts rather than current trends, Mad Atelier’s vibe is a melting pot of Southern European and Northern African aesthetics – much like the Mediterranean itself. This sun-kissed oasis is also home of Chantal’s architecture and design studio, established in 2013, which has excelled in giving characterful and historic buildings a contemporary reimagining. Mad Atelier’s home, for example, is a former East London boozer that had been empty for 12 years before the couple gave it a new lease of life.
Mad Atelier has taken part, for over three years, in the community life of Lower Clapton, including by promoting art and design in the neighbourhood.
