A Parklet outside Bread and Butter cafe would provide plants, space and an outdoor amenity for the local community. It would contribute to active travel especially around the school run for HNPS. Opportunities for 'Play On The Way' for children, and access to nature could also be provided through this Parklet. Bread and Butter cafe, Parents of Hackney New Primary School Air Quality Group and the local councillors are in favour of this, as is the Cabinet Member for Children, Families, Parks and Green Spaces. Images here are from Meristem Design who would design, build and instal the Parklet, some are inspiration from other sources. They are a guide only at this stage, based on their ‘Liverpool Parklet’ but would include seating and plants, Play features could be incorporated as could bike hoops for the cargo bikes which some of our car-free families use for their School run. There is also a longer Parklet image, potentially for Downham Road.
What we'll deliver:
Why it's a great idea:
Benefits to Bread and Butter Cafe in terms of space for customers to use to sit outside, benefits for air quality as more plants are there and hopefully improved pavement space would result in more active travel locally especially as parents would travel to and from school not in cars to enjoy the space more. Pavement parking has been a problem outside the school and cafe and this would deter drivers from doing this.
Steps to get it done:
This area is currently considered in need of improvement especially in terms of vehicles driving on the pavement near the school. There is currently no school street around the school and the Parklet would raise awareness of the school and that this is a public space so that hopefully drivers will be more considerate. This project has support in principle from Hackney council and we are working directly with the Mayor of Hackney, Phillip Glanville, to make it a reality. However, no funds will be transferred to the project until parklet designs are finalised and formal approvals from all relevant departments of the council have been secured, which we expect to happen during the duration of the campaign. https://t.co/GAK18uYe2 We have asked the council officers to consider removing or suspending two parking bays on Enfield Road on the other side of the road to the cafe, close to Kingsland Road. This would mean that the Parklet could be right by the cafe.
