The Mill Co. Project run the Rose Lipman Building in Hackney. We are a social enterprise and we operate the building as an affordable work space provision, arts and community centre. We also run the community hall for local events such as birthdays and weddings etc. Over the last 3 years we’ve had The Royal Court, The Barbican and lots of local groups use the space with a generous community offer.

The building has no signage and in order to improve the visibility of the building so that more people in the local area can see at a glance what is on offer, I’m looking to install a Read-O_Graph sign on the exterior of the building above the door. These are large illuminated signs, often seen on cinemas which have changeable letters so the building name can be displayed permanently but all the events that go on inside such as free workshops, theatre production and any other events of interest to the people of the borough, can be clearly seen from the surrounding area.

Why it's a great idea:

This building has tens of thousands of visitors a year but sometimes people struggle to find it. More importantly this is a community asset and we want the local community to be able to see whats on at a glance without having to come in and get a flyer or ask. The building offers a broad range of arts events which are often free to the public such as workshops, dance classes, Arts Awards and much more and people are missing out on what's on offer as we have no way of displaying this info on the outside of the building.

Steps to get it done:

• Using a local sign maker

I feel that this will greatly improve the relationship between the building and the local community as well as assisting in the elevation of the buildings reach to those new to the area or coming to then building for the first time.
