We will create and build a Park-let in Median Road, a pocket of green, a pedestrian friendly space to meet and connect, a canvas for local artists, a joyful addition to the streetscape.
Sorry this project was unsuccessful, we did not reach our fundraising goal.
This project has support in principle from Hackney council and we are working directly with the Mayor of Hackney, Phillip Glanville, to make it a reality. However, no funds will be transferred to the project until parklet designs are finalised and formal approvals from all relevant departments of the council have been secured, which we expect to happen during the duration of the campaign. The Parklet will be a great addition to our road to the benefit of the local community. It will be a place for meeting and networking, a pedestrian friendly pocket in Median Road. The Parklet will be located on a double parking bay by Mad Atelier, a boutique of interiors, architecture practice and art gallery. It will be an oasis of green, surrounded by pollution filtering plants, wild flowers and host a hotel for butterflies and bees. Its structure will be a canvas for art as we will involve local artists to decorate it.

The Pocket Garden will be a positive addition to the neighbourhood and a joyful complement to the streetscape; in the contemporary urbanity where parking spaces are no longer needed but more green is highly desired. A place for locals to meet, exchange ideas and connect; a green pocket for humans and wildlife .

VolunteerWe are Mad Atelier, a small independent business in Hackney, house to an architecture & design studio and to a furniture & interiors shop. Established by Italian architect Chantal Martinelli and her French husband Julien Desormeaux, Mad Atelier is a little pocket of Mediterranean style transported to London’s East End.
Opened in late 2017 on Lower Clapton Road, the store specialises in hand-selected playful pieces by contemporary designers, as well as vintage finds picked up by Chantal and Julien from galleries in Milan, Paris and Barcelona. The mix is constantly evolving as the duo discover new workshops, studios and craftspeople to collaborate with, often on exclusive pieces.
A reflection of Chantal and Julien’s instincts rather than current trends, Mad Atelier’s vibe is a melting pot of Southern European and Northern African aesthetics – much like the Mediterranean itself. This sun-kissed oasis is also home of Chantal’s architecture and design studio, established in 2013, which has excelled in giving characterful and historic buildings a contemporary reimagining. Mad Atelier’s home, for example, is a former East London boozer that had been empty for 12 years before the couple gave it a new lease of life.
Mad Atelier has taken part, for over three years, in the community life of Lower Clapton, including by promoting art and design in the neighbourhood.
