Sorry this project was unsuccessful, we did not reach our fundraising goal.

Currently this area is a patch of grass, underused for most of the year due to poor drainage issues. We would like to change this and create an area that is not only fit for use for the majority of the year but a space that is a beautiful environment for the school and local community; something that can be enjoyed by many for years to come. Lady Margaret School is a girls academy whose admission policy is truly comprehensive in terms of taking girls of mixed ability. Research has shown that environment positively affects students’ attitudes and their learning outcomes. In addition to enjoying the garden, students will be able to share responsibility for its maintenance. This project will also enrich the lives of the local community. The schools facilities are currently used by the community with children attending Saturday and holiday music and drama classes. They too will be able to enjoy this new space and it wil be used to host community music, drama and arts events.

What we'll deliver:

  • 240sqm of new turf laid
  • 27m of benching installed compared to the current 6 garden benches
  • 415m2 of water permeable bound gravel to improve surface water run-off and accessibility
  • 82m2 of planting beds will be created
  • Planting will be increased from 75m2 to 157m2
  • Removal of 407m2 of non-permeable tarmac and stone hard landscaping
  • Lighting will be installed to improved accessibility, safety
  • Planting of hedges to protect vunerable corners
  • Planting of trees

Why it's a great idea:

A much improved enviroment adding to the facitilies on site and an area that can be ultilised on many levels by different groups. Teaching staff will use the space as an outdoor learning area, with classes and revision sessions taking place prior to the public exams. Pupils will use it as an area in which to socialise during break times or as meeting points for house events and discussions. Lady Margaret School is in an urban location and many of the 756 pupils who attend the school do not have an outdoor space at home or the opportunity to care for plants and their environment. The space is not only used by the school but by members of the local community. Lady Margaret School is a venue for local music and drama groups during the holidays and at the week-end for Saturday classes therefore this space would be used by the local community and not exclusively by the school. LMS PTA events attract over 1,200 members of the community into the school grounds annually.

Steps to get it done:

  • September 2017 open the Centenary Garden to the school community
  • Planting schemes realised - funded by families of pupils "sponsor a shrub" - Phase 2
  • Summer 2016 begin structural build - Phase 1

Lady Margaret School celebrates its centenary in September 2017 and this would be a fitting legacy and something for pupils, friends, family and members of the local community to enjoy for years to come. An area that will be used on a day to day basis but also for cultural and community events.
