Bringing our bowling green up to modern standards by installing low maintenance bespoke reinforced concrete ditch sections replacing wooden supports prone to rotting and causing ditch collapse.
We intend to replace traditional timber supports which retain the edges of our bowling green with long life, low maintenance glass reinforced concrete sections. We will employ a specialist contractor to carry out the work supported by our own volunteers. The bowling green is one of the many sport, leisure, fitness, wellbeing and educational opportunities offered by Westerhope Community Association, a registered charity, to local residents of all ages and abilities. We estimate that in a typical season, bowling provides some 1500 hours of sporting activity and exercise to members, local residents and travelling teams from Newcastle, North Tyneside and Northumberland. Westerhope Community Association is nearing it's centenary year and hopes to serve the community for many years to come.
What we'll deliver:
Why it's a great idea:
Benefits will largely relate to the wellbeing of users by providing interaction between people with similar interest in both a fun and competitive environment. We already provide coaching sessions for the public of all ages and offer free use of equipment at these sessions. Competitively, our players compete in leagues run by Bowls Northumberland, an affiliate of Bowls England the national body.
Steps to get it done:
Although bowling is aimed largely at mature adults, the sport supports bowlers of all ages. Our Saturday morning coaching session are hugely popular in attract families with young children. We would like to think local schools would find this an attractive sporting opportunity. We will publicise free taster sessions to attract wider community participation
